Offline Backup and Encryption Are Crucial to Data Resilience

Apricorn's Jon Fielding on Recovery Testing, USB Encryption, Automated Backups

Data resilience extends beyond routine backups. While more than 90% of organizations have a backup strategy, nearly one-third fail to recover all data during a breach. Jon Fielding, managing director for EMEA at Apricorn, said without regular recovery tests, backup systems may fail when most needed.

The foundation of effective resilience is the 3-2-1 strategy: three copies of data, stored on two types of media, with one kept offline. Fielding also recommends hardware encryption to secure sensitive information and prevent malware access.

"You need to make sure that [the backup] is an uncompromised piece of data … and comes back in the format and the places you expect it to be," he said.

In this video interview with Information Security Media Group at Infosecurity Europe 2025, Fielding also discussed:

  • How encrypted USB storage mitigates risks from device loss and data breaches;
  • How incomplete or slow recovery disrupts business continuity;
  • The shift toward automated backup processes to eliminate human error.

Fielding is CISSP certified with 26 years in information security, spanning roles at IBM, Valicert, Tumbleweed and IronKey, where he led EMEA expansion. He's known for driving growth, building channel networks, and leading sales and ops across the secure USB and cybersecurity sectors.
