Excited to Share! I’m grateful to share that I’ve recently taken on management responsibilities for the UCSD Health Phlebotomy Draw Stations. It’s an honor to support this team of over 50 highly skilled phlebotomists who play a critical role in patient care across our UC Health System in San Diego County. Our draw stations serve communities throughout San Diego, including: Hillcrest • 4th & Lewis Medical Offices • Medical Offices South • McGrath Outpatient Pavilion La Jolla • Perlman Medical Offices • 4510 Executive Drive • University Center Lane • 8910 Villa La Jolla Drive • Moores Cancer Center Additional Locations • Genesee Avenue • Rancho Bernardo • Sorrento Valley • Scripps Ranch • Vista • Encinitas As I step into this role, I want to take a moment to highlight the essential work of our quality phlebotomists. What is a Phlebotomist? A phlebotomist is a trained healthcare professional who draws blood for laboratory testing, transfusions, and donations. Their work is foundational to accurate diagnoses and safe, effective patient care. Key Responsibilities: • Drawing blood: Performing venipunctures and collecting samples safely and efficiently. • Patient preparation: Explaining procedures and helping patients feel comfortable. • Sample handling: Labeling, storing, and transporting specimens with precision. • Safety: Maintaining a sterile environment and ensuring proper needle disposal. • Administrative duties: Verifying patient information and maintaining accurate records. Where They Work: Phlebotomists support hospitals, clinics, diagnostic labs, and blood donation centers. Path to the Profession: Most phlebotomists complete a postsecondary training program that includes classroom instruction and hands-on clinical experience. While only some states require certification, employers in California—including UCSD Health—require it. I’m proud to support our UC San Diego Health dedicated professionals who make high-quality laboratory medicine possible every day. Looking forward to what’s ahead!

We’re proud to share that David Rubin, UC Health’s executive vice president, has been appointed to the Future of Medi-Cal Commission. The newly established commission is dedicated to developing an actionable 10-year roadmap to modernize Medi-Cal’s financing, administration, and long-term sustainability. Medi-Cal is the cornerstone of California’s health care system, providing comprehensive health, dental, and behavioral health coverage to 15 million people — more than one in three Californians. It reduces health disparities, supports families with economic stability, addresses social needs like housing and nutrition, and fills critical coverage gaps for children with complex conditions, older adults, and people with disabilities. As the significant providers of inpatient and outpatient care to Medi-Cal members, UC’s academic health centers and faculty practices are deeply committed to strengthening the program that so many Californians rely on. UC Health looks forward to partnering with organizations across California’s health care landscape on a roadmap for a more effective and sustainable Medi-Cal program. https://lnkd.in/gayEVGWX #MediCal #CalAIM #PublicService #HealthPolicy #FutureOfMediCal

#HealthEquity (n): a fair and just opportunity for all to be as healthy as possible. It sounds simple, but in today’s climate of hyper-politicized semantics, even the most universal of truths can be misconstrued, or worse, weaponized. That’s why conversations like this matter. Dr. Crystal Cené, MD, MPH, FAHA, UC San Diego Health’s Chief Administrative Officer for Health Equity, recently hosted a roundtable for The New England Journal of Medicine to clarify what health equity really means, and how it differs from diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI). She and fellow experts (Dr. Lisa Cooper, Dr. David Ansell, and Dr. Merlin Chowkwanyun) explored why these concepts are distinct yet interconnected and why conflating them can slow progress. They also addressed the growing challenges to achieving health equity today, from political backlash to systemic barriers that affect patients’ access to care. At UC San Diego Health, we are committed to reducing, and ultimately eliminating, health disparities via data-driven care, community partnerships, and programs that address social determinants of health—because improving outcomes for all patients strengthens the health of our entire region.
