Wildfire safety starts at home, but two terms often get mixed up. Here’s the quick breakdown: Defensible Space This is the buffer zone you create around your home by removing dead plants, spacing trees and shrubs, and keeping grass trimmed. The goal is simple: reduce fuel so a wildfire has less to burn. Think of it as creating room for firefighters to safely protect your home. Home Hardening This focuses on making your house itself resistant to embers and heat. Upgrades like ember-resistant vents, Class A roofing, double-pane windows, metal gutters, and noncombustible fencing help prevent embers—the leading cause of home loss—from getting inside or igniting your structure. Together, they work as a system. Defensible space reduces exposure. Home hardening increases protection. When combined, your wildfire risk drops dramatically.
