Markers with SVG and Font

  • google.maps.Marker is deprecated, with google.maps.marker.AdvancedMarkerElement being the recommended replacement for enhanced functionality.

  • This example demonstrates how to use custom markers with Material Icons and Font Awesome icons in Google Maps.

  • The sample code showcases marker implementation using both TypeScript and JavaScript, with the option to run it locally or in Google Cloud Shell.

  • You need Git and Node.js installed to run this sample locally by cloning the repository and installing the dependencies.

This example demonstrates using the Material Icons and Font Awesome Icons with a Marker.

TypeScript

import { faBus } from "@fortawesome/free-solid-svg-icons"; function initMap(): void {  const center = { lat: 36.6163, lng: -100.605 };  const map = new google.maps.Map(  document.getElementById("map") as HTMLElement,  {  zoom: 15,  center,  }  );  // use a FontAwesome svg  new google.maps.Marker({  position: { lat: 36.6163, lng: -100.61 },  map,  icon: {  path: faBus.icon[4] as string,  fillColor: "#0000ff",  fillOpacity: 1,  anchor: new google.maps.Point(  faBus.icon[0] / 2, // width  faBus.icon[1] // height  ),  strokeWeight: 1,  strokeColor: "#ffffff",  scale: 0.075,  },  title: "FontAwesome SVG Marker",  });  // use a Material Icon as font  new google.maps.Marker({  position: { lat: 36.6163, lng: -100.6 },  map,  label: {  text: "\ue530", // codepoint from https://fonts.google.com/icons  fontFamily: "Material Icons",  color: "#ffffff",  fontSize: "18px",  },  title: "Material Icon Font Marker",  }); } declare global {  interface Window {  initMap: () => void;  } } window.initMap = initMap;

JavaScript

import { faBus } from "@fortawesome/free-solid-svg-icons"; function initMap() {  const center = { lat: 36.6163, lng: -100.605 };  const map = new google.maps.Map(document.getElementById("map"), {  zoom: 15,  center,  });  // use a FontAwesome svg  new google.maps.Marker({  position: { lat: 36.6163, lng: -100.61 },  map,  icon: {  path: faBus.icon[4],  fillColor: "#0000ff",  fillOpacity: 1,  anchor: new google.maps.Point(  faBus.icon[0] / 2, // width  faBus.icon[1], // height  ),  strokeWeight: 1,  strokeColor: "#ffffff",  scale: 0.075,  },  title: "FontAwesome SVG Marker",  });  // use a Material Icon as font  new google.maps.Marker({  position: { lat: 36.6163, lng: -100.6 },  map,  label: {  text: "\ue530", // codepoint from https://fonts.google.com/icons  fontFamily: "Material Icons",  color: "#ffffff",  fontSize: "18px",  },  title: "Material Icon Font Marker",  }); } window.initMap = initMap;

CSS

/*   * Always set the map height explicitly to define the size of the div element  * that contains the map.   */ #map {  height: 100%; } /*   * Optional: Makes the sample page fill the window.   */ html, body {  height: 100%;  margin: 0;  padding: 0; }
