WHY ACCESSIBILITY IS IMPORTANT • Support People with Disabilities • It’s the right thing to do • No one wants to exclude others • Promote a Culture of Accessibility and Inclusion • Allows more people to be actively engaged, contributing their perspectives and insight • Helps society reach a fuller potential through greater collaboration and innovation • The Better Business Case • Websites that are usable by persons with disabilities are often easier for everyone to use • Better SEO • Human Rights and the Law • In Ontario it’s the law!
HOW CAN WEB PAGES BE ACCESSIBLE? We’ll cover lots of topics throughout the course! Today: Headings (<h1>, <h2>, <h3>, etc.) • Sighted users often scroll the page quickly and look for big, bold text (headings) to get an idea of the structure and content of the page • Screen readers (eg. “JAWS”) and other assistive technology users also have the ability to navigate web pages by heading structure, assuming true headings are used (as opposed to text that is styled to be big and/or bold) • This means that the user can view a list of all of the headings on the page, or can read or jump by headings, or even navigate directly to top level headings (<h1>), next level headings (<h2>), third level headings (<h3>), and so on.
