Open Source at scale: the Apache Software Foundation
The Apache Software Foundation is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that oversees around 200 open-source software projects and has over 3,000 committers and 400 members. It has no offices or meetings and operates through asynchronous collaboration via mailing lists, code repositories, and issue trackers. Individuals contribute to projects based on technical merit rather than their employer. The foundation provides a neutral space for open collaboration on software projects using well-defined principles.
