Your response determines the outcome. For security professionals, de-escalation is the critical safety skill that prevents a situation from becoming a crisis. 1. Control your presence, stay calm and use non-threatening body language. Respect personal space. Your composure sets the tone. 2. Listen, validate, actively listen, and empathize to diffuse the intensity. Offer choices instead of commands to give control back to the individual. 3.
