My name is Thomas Owens.
Professionally, I’m a software engineer specializing in software engineering processes and practices. I work with product development teams, organizational leaders, and other stakeholders to streamline development and delivery processes and improve interactions between the people building software systems.
I graduated from the Rochester Institute of Technology in May 2011 with a BS in Software Engineering and minors in Management and Communication. I completed internships and cooperative education experiences with the Air Force Research Laboratory, ITT Corporation, and Goodrich Corporation (now Raytheon, an RTX Business). I also worked as a Teaching Assistant and Grader for the Engineering of Software Subsystems course, focusing on object-oriented design and design patterns.
After completing my undergraduate studies at RIT, I accepted a position as a software engineer with the team I worked with at Goodrich Corporation (later UTC Aerospace Systems and Collins Aerospace, now Raytheon). I developed image processing and system test equipment. I also represented the software engineering organization in the engineering process group, where I developed policies and procedures to support business and quality management requirements. I also represented the site software engineering organization in an enterprise-wide center of excellence, sharing good practices and lessons learned across business units.
In 2016, I accepted a position as a software engineer at DrugDev (now IQVIA). In addition to participating in the design and development of the IQVIA Investigator Site Portal, I also served as a team coach to support the growing software development organization. In 2019, I moved from a software engineering role to a process improvement role, where I continue to work across the IQVIA Digital Products and Solutions Clinical Technologies product portfolio to document and improve product development processes. I work closely with teams such as quality assurance, information security, and privacy to ensure that the product teams align with pharmaceutical industry standards, software engineering industry standards, and enterprise requirements.
I regularly contribute to the broader professional community. I was inducted into the Rochester Institute of Technology Link of the Order of the Engineer in April 2011. I’m a member of the IEEE, ACM, and PMI. I contribute to developing systems and software engineering standards as a member of the IEEE Standards Association. I serve on the ACM’s Committee on Professional Ethics, where I helped create the 2018 ACM Code of Ethics and Professional Conduct and assist in investigating reports of Code of Ethics violations. I participate in various discussion groups, forums, and other communities related to software engineering, including serving as a community-elected volunteer moderator on three communities in the Stack Exchange network.
Outside of my professional activities, I enjoy running and have completed numerous races between 5k and half marathon distances, with the 5k and 10k distances being my favorites. I occasionally attend local theater and musical performances. I enjoy playing board, card, and video games to unwind and relax.
I reside in Rochester, New York, with my wife, Caitlin O’Halloran, and dog, Alice.
