I have Ubuntu 24.04 on my work laptop and use Edge Apps for Outlook and Teams. (I use webapps because that is the only thing that works here and Edge because it has been configured for single sign on.)

This has worked fine, but since the end of last week, pressing F7 anywhere opens the Outlook App. I use Midnight commander extensively, so losing F7 is a problem. Moreover, I see that also F8 stopped working in the terminal, even if it does not seem to do anything else.

This happens even if I have no other Edge window open, so it looks like a system shortcut of some sort. I have looked at Edge settings, but did not find anything there.

How can remove/unregister this shortcut? And, more generally, is there a way of listing all active system-wide keyboard shortcuts?

Does it only happen when edge is running, or does it also happen when Edge is not running (something like you press F7, Edge opens automatically and shows outlook)? If it happens only when edge is running, does Edge need to be the focused window? Commented 2 days ago

@ArchismanPanigrahi This does not require running Edge, i.e., pressing F7 opens Outlook App even if there we no Edge windows open. I have updated the question with this info. Commented 2 days ago
  • ① anything of use in this MS post. ② have you looked at Settings ⇒ Keyboard ⇒ View and Customise Shortcuts ⇒ Sound and Media ⇒ Stop Playback to see whether enabled - if not, set that key to F7 (which is the usual media default) or some other task is you prefer. If it is assigned, unasign it. Commented 2 days ago

I found the manual for the Kinesis Advantage keyboard and pressing "=i" activates the following shortcuts: F7 for email and F8 for browser. Case closed... Commented 2 days ago

The problem turned out to be in my keyboard: I use Kinesis Advantage programmable keyboard and it turns out that pressing =i (or, more precisely the key above Tab + i, since these combinations are tied to the physical keys, not their meaning in the current layout) makes F7 a shortcut for email and F8 for browser. Deactivating this feature (with for eg. =p) removed the shortcuts, which resolved the issue.

In case someone was interested, the keyboard was sending these codes (according to xev):

  • F7: keycode 163 (keysym 0x1008ff19, XF86Mail) - this opens the default email
  • F8: keycode 180 (keysym 0x1008ff18, XF86HomePage) - this does nothing
