This post shows how to install it and run on OpenBSD.

Environment

  • OS: OpenBSD 7.3
  • Daemon and client: Tor 0.4

Tutorial

Install

The easiest way is to use pkg_add:

$ doas pkg_add tor
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

The result was:

quirks-6.121 signed on 2023-06-27T13:21:34Z tor-0.4.7.13:libevent-2.1.12p0: ok tor-0.4.7.13: ok The following new rcscripts were installed: /etc/rc.d/tor See rcctl(8) for details.
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Configure (Optional)

The configuration file is placed as /etc/tor/torrc.

Run the daemon

Activate it first:

$ doas rcctl enable tor
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Then run:

$ doas rcctl start tor
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

It printed out like:

tor(ok)
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Check it works

Run to test:

$ curl \  -x socks5h://127.0.0.1:9050 \ -s https://check.torproject.org/api/ip
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

You will see like:

{"IsTor":true,"IP":"xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx"}
Enter fullscreen mode Exit fullscreen mode

Yes, it's working fine and we are in the Tor network and relays :)
