Like OpenIndiana, FreeBSD uses a ZFS root filesystem by default. Ergo, the backup method is approximately the same: backup everything that's a ZFS filesystem and exclude the rest. Additional exclusions:
/dev/* /tmp/* /mnt/* /proc/* /compat/*
