Paris/Beijing - Social media giant Facebook has finally resolved its eight-year tax dispute with the French government. The company recently agreed to pay €106 million (about $125 million) in back taxes, covering unpaid taxes from 2009-2018 plus a €22 million fine.
Zhao Yongsheng, director of the French Economic Research Center at the University of International Business and Economics, said: "This settlement is a win-win for both parties. For Facebook, the tax payment is negligible compared to its revenue, but helps maintain relations with the French government. For the French government, it proves that Macron's tax policies on tech giants are working."
Current State of Tech Company Tax Avoidance:
- US tech companies avoided over $100 billion in taxes through legal means in the past decade
- The EU lost €5.4 billion in tax revenue due to avoidance from 2013-2015
- Facebook shifted French profits to Irish subsidiaries with only 12.5% tax rate
France's 2019 "digital tax" (also known as the "GAFA tax") directly targets four major US tech giants - Google, Apple, Facebook and Amazon - imposing a 3% tax on companies with global digital revenue exceeding €750 million and French revenue over €25 million.
US-EU Trade Dispute Trends:
Although the US has threatened to impose 25% tariffs on French luxury goods in retaliation, experts believe actual implementation is unlikely. Zhao Yongsheng noted: "French luxury goods have a monopoly position in the US high-end market. Raising tariffs would only harm American consumers. The core of US-EU trade disputes will remain focused on competitive industries like automobiles and aviation."
With the rapid development of the global digital economy, governments worldwide are taking increasingly tough stances on taxing tech giants. Facebook's compromise may set an industry precedent, signaling the end of an era when tech companies could easily avoid taxes overseas.
