Kong has rolled out Insomnia 12, an open source platform update that brings familiar workflows into the emerging world of agentic AI.
Kong Inc. has announced the release of Insomnia 12, the latest version of its open source API development platform, designed to accelerate both API and Model Context Protocol (MCP) server development as organisations move deeper into agentic AI workflows. The update bridges traditional API design and debugging workflows with AI-native development, enabling developers to test, build, and iterate with less complexity and greater reliability.
With the adoption of agentic AI rising, developers working on MCP servers are encountering challenges that mirror earlier stages of API development, particularly around validation, testing speed, and governance. Insomnia 12 addresses these requirements by extending its established test-iterate-debug workflow into the AI-native environment.
A core feature of Insomnia 12 is its native MCP client support, allowing direct server connections, manual tool and prompt invocation, and protocol-level inspection. This brings clarity and collaborative confidence to MCP development.
The platform also introduces AI-driven mock server generation, which can create functional mock servers in seconds from natural language instructions, JSON samples, URLs, or OpenAPI specifications. AI-powered commit suggestions further streamline development by generating clear commit messages and logical grouping of file changes.
To support privacy and governance needs, the update enables organisations to choose between cloud-based AI models or local large language models, ensuring data control and compliance flexibility. Enhanced collaboration also comes through Git Sync and expanded enterprise governance options including SCIM, SSO, and RBAC.
“With MCP emerging as the new standard for how AI agents communicate, developers need a reliable way to test, debug, and govern this new protocol. Insomnia 12 addresses this need by extending the same developer-friendly workflows we have built for APIs to the AI-native world,” said Marco Palladino, CTO and Co-Founder, Kong Inc.
“We are empowering organisations to accelerate agentic AI infrastructure development with built-in confidence, collaboration, and scalability.”
