💲 It's a stall-speed US economy in need of a few interest rate cuts to reignite growth. "I think we are close to stall speed. Where exactly we are relative to stall speed, it's hard to know," Goldman Sachs chief economist Jan Hatzius told me at the firm's annual Communacopia + Technology conference on Monday. Hatzius thinks growth will be "relatively slow" before beginning to improve in 2026 following the Federal Reserve's interest rate cuts. The Bureau of Labor Statistics expanded its use of a technique to fill in gaps in inflation data it wasn’t able to collect through traditional methods, adding to concerns about the agency’s ability to reliably report on key US economic figures. The share of imputed prices in the August consumer price index that relied on so-called different-cell imputation rose to 36%, up from 32% a month earlier and the highest in data back to 2019, the BLS said Thursday. In February, it accounted for just 9%. When the costs of certain items aren’t available in a particular metropolitan area, this method substitutes price data from other locations, which economists say can hamper accuracy. DE Shaw: From $28 million to $65 billion. Hedge fund DE Shaw was founded in 1988 over a small bookstore in downtown New York City with six employees and almost $28 million in capital. Founder David Elliot Shaw received his PhD from Stanford University in 1980 and served on the faculty of the Computer Science Department at Columbia University until 1986. He later joined Morgan Stanley as a VP for technology before starting DE Shaw. Known as one of the pioneers in quantitative investing, DE Shaw started hiring some of the world's top mathematicians, computer scientists, economists and traders in the 90s. Since its inception, DE Shaw has generated net gains of $67 billion, including $11 billion in 2024. The hedge fund now manages $65 billion in assets and has over 2,500 employees. Founder David Elliot Shaw's net worth stands at around $8 billion. #hedgefunds
