You're right, Slack/Trello alt is what I view it as, but the Trello part was more relevant for me.

For anyone reading, Zulip (for Slack) and Wekan (for Trello) are good replacements.

I needed to switch an org away from Slack, seems like Zulip has a new customer :).

You do have to pay for a server, but that's kind of inevitable (as in: a server is required to run most chat software, so someone will have to rent one).

RestlessIDE allows for a quick install of Zulip team chat on your Host. Zulip is an open-source application that contains all of the features you know and love from Slack or Teams (or maybe not Teams?) but in a self-hosted environment. You can access it remotely using their mobile apps while keeping your data on your Host. It even has video meetings with Zoom integration if you are a customer.
