Adding custom configuration per root.conf

Good Morning
I would like to overwrite some settings by the use of the custom config files, e.g. root.conf and http.conf. I can do so for parameters which have not already been defined. Otherwise I get the error „duplicate directive“. How can I overwrite the the default settings of NPM which are already defined?
