Edit the header

The header is the top part of a website that typically shows the site title, a logo, and a navigation menu. Our guides will show you how to customize your website’s header.

Requirements

To follow the steps in this guide, choose a theme that supports the Site Editor. A quick way to determine if your site uses the Site Editor is to check for Appearance → Editor in your site’s dashboard.

Edit the header

To customize your header, you will edit the Header template part. Once you edit this template part, the changes will apply to all pages of your site where this header is shown.

Follow these steps to access the Header template part:

  1. Visit your site’s dashboard.
  2. Navigate to Appearance → Editor to open the Site Editor.
  3. Click the homepage preview on the right, or select the patterns tab to customize a specific template part.
  4. Click the List view button in the top-left corner of the editor. It’s the icon that looks like three horizontal lines above each other.
  5. Select your Header template part in the List view.
  6. You can add, remove, and align content in your header or start with a Header pattern.

Use a header pattern

Pick a premade header block pattern to quickly insert a beautiful and professionally designed header layout. Learn how to replace your header with a header pattern by following these steps:

  1. Go to Appearance → Editor.
  2. Click the homepage preview on the right, or select the patterns tab to customize a specific template part.
  3. Click the List view button in the top-left corner of the editor. It’s the icon that looks like three horizontal lines above each other.
  4. Select your Header template part in the List view.
  5. In the block settings sidebar, browse through various Design options.
  6. Click a design to apply it to your header. (You can undo your changes or select another header design.)
  7. Click the “Save” button to save your changes.
