Merge two WordPress.com accounts

If you have two WordPress.com accounts and want to consolidate your sites and upgrades under one main account, follow this guide. You’ll learn how to transfer your sites and any associated upgrades to your preferred account, making it easier to manage everything in one place.

Your accounts

An “account” refers to the login you use to manage your WordPress.com sites. It’s tied to a username and email address.

In these instructions, the account you no longer want to use will be called the unwanted account, and the account you want to keep will be the main account.

You will start the process by logging into your unwanted account to move sites, domains, and purchases to the main account.

For a smoother process, use two entirely different browsers (e.g., Chrome for one account and Firefox for the other). This helps prevent issues where confirmation links might log you into the wrong account if you’re using the same browser.

If you would like to move purchases or domains between two sites under the same account, follow these steps instead:

Step 1: Move your sites out of the unwanted account

For any websites owned by the unwanted account, move them to your main account with the following steps:

  1. Log into the unwanted WordPress.com account and visit your Sites list by clicking the “W” logo at the top left.
  2. Click the ellipsis (⋮) under Actions and select Settings from the drop-down menu.
An arrow pointing from the ellipsis under Actions to the "Settings" option in the drop-down.
  1. Click the “Transfer site” button.
  2. Enter the email address or username of your main account and click the Continue button.
  3. Read the information presented, then click the “Start transfer” button.
  4. Check your email inbox for the email address belonging to your unwanted account, where you’ll need to click a link to authorize the transfer to your main account.
  5. You’ll then receive a confirmation email at the email address belonging to your main account.

If you purchased a plan, domain, email, or other subscription for this site, it will automatically move to your main account as well.

Repeat this process for all websites in your unwanted account that you wish to move to your main account. For more details, visit our Transfer a Site to a New Owner guide.

Step 2: Transfer unattached domains to the main account

To transfer unattached domains (domains not connected to a specific site) from your unwanted account to your main account, follow the steps in the Transfer a Domain to Another WordPress.com Account guide.

To check if you have unattached domains, visit the Purchases page for the unwanted account. If any domains remain here that did not get moved to your main account during the previous step, you can move them now.

When you transfer these domains, any associated email services will also be moved to the main account.

Step 3: Change the email address of the unwanted account

No two WordPress.com accounts can use the same email address. If the email address associated with your unwanted account is the email you actually wish to use for your main account, you can free up the email address to use with whichever account you need.

Visit the account settings of the unwanted account and change the email address there to any other address you own (but don’t want to use for your main account).

This will release the email address for you to use with your main account. You can then log into your main account and change its email address to the address you just freed up.

Visit our Change Your Email Address guide for more.

Usernames

To prevent impersonation, usernames can never be reused on WordPress.com. While you can change the username of your unwanted account, the username will not be released to use with your main account.

However, if you have a name you wish to use with your main account, you can update your public display name, which can be whatever you would like. The username will still be what you use to log in, but the username won’t be seen publicly — your public display name will be seen instead.

Step 4: Unsubscribe the unwanted account from sites

To leave a site you no longer wish to have associated with your account, take the following steps:

  1. Visit the Sites page.
  2. Click the ellipsis (⋮) under Actions for the unwanted site and select “Leave site” from the drop-down menu.
An arrow from the ellipses menu under Actions to the "Leave site" option in the drop-down menu.
  1. Read the pop-up that is telling that leaving will remove your access to the site, including all content, users, domains, upgrades, and anything else you have access to.
  2. Check the box and click the “Leave site” button again to proceed.

Step 5: Close the unwanted account

After completing the above steps to move everything from your unwanted account, you may proceed with deleting the unwanted account.
