(Translated by Google) The house was originally the residence of General Bento Gonçalves' grandparents, and was his birthplace, but was later transformed into a museum. The collection includes several original pieces from the period, not only from the Farroupilha Revolution but also from the history of the Triunfo region and artifacts from the Second World War. The reception provides detailed, often curious, information about the origin and use of the pieces, as well as facts related to the Farroupilha Revolution and the history of the region. For history lovers, this is an unmissable visit. There is a very nice little playground for children. There are many benches scattered around for those who want to rest in the shade. A great place for the summer. There are public restrooms inside the park. There is no place to buy water or food, and I didn't see any drinking fountains. A small parking lot right in front. Free admission. The Parque da Baronesa Municipal Museum, formerly known as Chácara dos Barões de Três Serros, is the region where Pelotas began to be populated, with the installation of the first meat-packing plants around 1800. The former residence includes a set of architectural elements in the romantic style, such as a small castle, a bathroom, a fountain, a French and an English garden, canals with bridges and lakes with islands, a cave (with a brick masonry structure covered with mortar imitating stone, which was studded with raw quartz) and a two-story house in the American bungalow style from 1935. All of them could be better marked out and restored, but it is still worth seeing.

Saint Peter Cathedral

Catholic church
Sights & Landmarks
Churches & Cathedrals
Saint Peter Cathedral, established in 1755, holds the distinction of being the oldest church in Rio Grande do Sul and one of the earliest from Laguna to Montevideo. This historic temple began its parish life a year later and has since served as a vital center for faith and community in Rio Grande. Visitors are drawn not only by its religious significance but also by its artistic and architectural charm. The cathedral offers an inviting space for prayer, meditation, and reflection on life's deeper meanings.
In August 25, 1755 was born the oldest church of Rio Grande do Sul and also the oldest since Laguna (SC) to Montevideo (Uruguay). In 1756 the Matriz de São Pedro starts its parish life with the administration of the sacraments. Rooted in the center of the recent and newest settlement, the Church would play a leading role as focus radiator of faith and concentration element of sociability in the city of Rio Grande. *****

Praia do Cassino is an expansive sandy shoreline, spanning over 220 kilometers, making it one of the world's lengthiest beaches. It boasts dunes, piers, and even a shipwreck. While it may be the largest beach globally in terms of area, its cleanliness leaves much to be desired. However, despite its lack of hygiene, it remains an enjoyable destination for visitors. It is advisable to plan a trip when the weather conditions are optimal to enhance the experience.

(Translated by Google) The museum is really cool. It is very well preserved and the tour is very dynamic. The guide was very friendly and attentive and gave us some really interesting information. We just didn't know how old Carlos Barbosa's children were who died, and whether they were born before or after the three who survived. The museum entrance fee is 10 reais. The tour is very easy. The gardens are beautiful. We bought the catalogue which cost 25 reais. It's a shame that the number of visitors is limited. You can park in front of the museum. It's really worth the visit. The Foundation is to be congratulated for maintaining this beautiful collection. (Original) Muito legal o Museu. I was greeted by the guide Ágata, who has a great knowledge of the history of the Carlos Barbosa Gonçalves family. The house was built in 1888 in the Greco-Roman style and has a glass walkway surrounding the garden, providing excellent lighting and ventilation. An interesting fact is how the house was divided. The summer bedrooms are located more externally and the winter bedrooms more internally. According to the guide, this was the first house to have electric light and some bulbs with visible filaments are still working today. Most of the furniture and accessories in the house came from Europe. The visit takes approximately one hour but is extremely interesting.

Bridge
Sights & Landmarks
My wife is an architect, and is building a structure in the border town of Rio Branco, Uruguay. This is the border crossing bridge between this city and Jaguarão, Brazil. Río Branco is famous for the Duty Free Shops where you can buy all kinds of products at highly discounted prices. Food Stuffs, booze, Perfumes, name brand clothing, appliances, tools, and much more. You have to show your international identification, and pay with a foreign credited card or cash. Uruguayans can not buy in these shops, so hoards of Brazilians flock to these shops. The Uruguayan side also has a very nice Casino. Jaguarão, Brazil is still a very traditional lazy border town. This is where you buy your food and pharmacy needs as the Brazilian side of the border is much cheaper than the Uruguayan side. I love to go there, and my kids love it too. Enjoy!

Boats depart from this location to reach the Ombues forest, a charming tourist attraction. The late afternoon is the optimal time to visit during summer, offering a pleasant experience. Additionally, some establishments provide the option of enjoying meals on-site. Overall, this picturesque destination offers an unforgettable and enjoyable outing for visitors.

We contacted them the day before for a boat tour, which lasted nearly 3hrs. As it was low season we were alone and did enjoy a wonderful tour with Marcos who is extremely passionate about the Ombués. He is a great source of knowledge of the Ombués and a wonderful guide. Even though our Spanish is very limited he took to the time and efforts to explain in simple terms the beauty and uniqueness of the area. We learned so much about the Ombués and what is means to keep nature in a balance. Furthermore, Marcos is such a friendly and humorous person that the whole trip will be a remarkable experience and memory of our our time in Uruguay. It’s a must do if your interested in nature and what to disfrutar something special. Thanks Marcos !

(Translated by Google) Excellent!!! A short and beautiful adventure. The encounter with hundreds of years made green and dreams, woody and latticework the ombú, here Marcos guide and custodian, shows us how it becomes hollow and new when it grows, shade for the crowns, pure wood and good firewood, between 300 and 1000 years of storms and suns and the countryman's eaves on the coast of the valizas river, and the birds, the mullets jumping around our boat and roseate spoonbills, body shots and real shots, all tame and beautiful. Thank you for taking care of this paradise and even more thank you for preserving it. Thanks 🙂 (Original) Excelente!!! Una breve y bella aventura. We depart by boat from Route 10 and the Arrollo Valizas, to Laguna de Castillos. There you go down to Monte de Ombúes de Los Olivera. Marcos shows you the different trees, telling you the peculiarities of each one, how they grow, how they take care of them, etc. It tells you where you can take fun photos and has a special gift for entertaining children. Then you cross by boat to the municipal ombúes mountain that is opposite, on the other side of the stream, here the route is smaller and you can see a mountain of ombúes without intervention of man and livestock. And it ends by returning to the starting point on the boat, watching, in our case because we did the tour in the afternoon, how the sun goes down. The route is beautiful, super quiet, they show you the different birds that can be seen along the route. And the arrival at Mount Ombues with the Castillo Lagoon in the background is beautiful. Super recommendable ride, we loved it and we all enjoyed it a lot!

The views and esthetics of the building and property are amazing, but we weren’t impressed with the tour we went on. We signed up for the Spanish tour but when we arrived they said only English & Portuguese were available (in Uruguay!), they seemed a bit disorganized, started late, and didn’t have the depth of information or wine tasting we are used to receiving on a tour. Overall it wasn’t very professional and I don’t think it was worth the long drive on mostly dirt roads to get there.
Colette F — Google review
Overpriced and overrated. We drove 1h extra to visit this place. When you arrive there is a guarded fence when they ask your name and if you are on the list. So unnecessary. The staff was amazing. Kind and warm. But with this kind of restaurant i would expect top notch service. Empty glasses were left on the table far too long. We had 2 empty glasses and 1 with wine each at one point. Food was ok. But not up to our expectation. I dont mind paying for for good food and wine but this was simply insulting! Unless you want to play big shot and be seen with wannabe posh people I would avoid…

The experience offered is elite level, the chef and team are amazing, the sommelier is quite prepared, facilities are incredible and the view from the restaurant and fire kitchen are unbelievable. Totally worth it.

My recent visit to Bodega Garzón in Garzón was an absolute delight! From the moment I arrived, I was impressed by the stunning scenery and the warm hospitality of the staff. The tour itself was informative and engaging, providing a fascinating glimpse into the world of winemaking at Bodega Garzón. A special thanks in this regard to our guide, Emiliano. Excellent is not enough to describe your knowledge and how he conducted our group. The wine tasting elevated the experience as well. Each sip was a revelation, showcasing the exceptional quality and unique character of their wines. The pairing with cheese, bread, and olives perfectly complemented the flavors, creating a truly memorable culinary journey. I left Bodega Garzón feeling both informed and deeply satisfied. If you're looking for an unforgettable wine experience in Uruguay, I highly recommend adding this to your itinerary.

Some information that might be useful: -You MUST have a reservation to one of their experiences in order to enter this place. A couple hundred meters from the main buildings there's a fence with a guard that will block you if you don't have one. They will not allow you to just show up to buy a bottle wine, or take pictures. Also, internet connection there is quite bad and it'll be a hassle to make a reservation on the spot. -They are NOT pet friendly. The guard told us that we could enter if we made a reservation on the spot but our dog wouldn't be allowed to leave the car, even though some of the experiences they offer are outdoors. Go figure. -If you really want to visit but have some questions, contact them very early on because they take a long time to answer. We tried calling, email and Instagram, they answered one of our questions over IG after 3 days.

A fantastic place, both for its modern architectural design harmoniously integrated into the landscape, and for its exceptional wines. The culinary experience is equally remarkable. A highly recommended destination.

Nestled in the stunning Lavalleja region of Uruguay, Salto del Penitente is a captivating destination that showcases nature's beauty through its impressive waterfall and serene mineral pools. This large state park offers visitors an array of trails that lead to breathtaking mountain views, small waterfalls, and inviting natural pools perfect for a refreshing dip. Adventurous souls will find plenty to do here, from rock climbing to horseback riding, making it an ideal spot for thrill-seekers.
Fabulous views. The drive is amazing. If you love the outdoors a must visit. Pack a picnic and spend a few hours.

Our visit to Salto del Penitente was nothing short of an adventure! With six friends, we explored this breathtaking spot, and it definitely delivered on excitement. The highlight was the ropeway—an exhilarating ride that added a rush of adrenaline to the scenic beauty surrounding us. One thing to note: the network is unreliable, so carry cash for payments. While cards are accepted, if you need to do a bank transfer, you’ll have to connect to Wi-Fi from a nearby location where you book the ropeway. The staff handling the ropeway were very helpful, making the experience even more enjoyable. For food, the Parador restaurant is a great stop, offering a solid menu with good options. It’s the perfect place to recharge after your adventures. However, if you're heading to Agua del Penitente, be extra cautious—the road is slippery. Unfortunately, we witnessed someone take a serious fall, which was a stark reminder of how important it is to watch your step in these rugged areas. Despite the few challenges, this place is packed with adventure, making it a fantastic destination for thrill-seekers and nature lovers alike. Highly recommended for those looking for an exciting and scenic getaway!

One of the best nature spots in the country. Beautiful waterfall that runs through a rock channel into a pond with hills all around. Great spot for a picnic, to relax, or do some of the activities they offer.

With a beautiful lake and wonderful waterfall, Salto del Penitente is a gorgeous site to visit while in Uruguay. The hike to the different locations on the site is short, yet a bit steep to go to the waterfall. There are also zipline attractions in the site, though a very short glide.

Beautiful place, full of nature, amazing landscape, great for adventurous people, beautiful sightseeing. Great for families, not accessible for people on wheelchairs. There's food and shelter. It has a couple of attractions like zipline and others. Not dangerous at all.

Laguna Garzón Bridge

Bridge

Nice place to visit.
Joan L — Google review
Located in the Maldonado Department of southeastern Uruguay, the bridge spans Uruguay's Laguna Garzón and it’s an essential connection between Rocha and Maldonado counties. Previously cars were using a small 2-vehicle ferry that required daylight and good weather to operate. And now, about 1000 vehicles are crossing it daily. Inaugurated in 22 December 2015, the bridge was designed by a famous local architect Rafael Viñoly. The construction is tall enough for ships to pass below. It was created with 16 circular concrete pillars placed 20 meters (65 feet) apart and this unusual circular bridge has a 202-meter (663-foot) ring. Looking down from the bridge, visitors have a great view on a coastal lagoon in an ecologically protected area of Maldonado region. The shape of Laguna Garzón Bridge is not simply the result of a unique artistic vision, it's very practical too. Its two semi-circular one-way sections force drivers to slow down and take in the view to provide an opportunity to enjoy panoramic views to an amazing landscape, including crosswalks that allow pedestrian access to either the inner or outer sidewalks of the circle. * Some photos courtesy of Internet. Thanks!
Dinh T — Google review
A vehicle traveling across the bridge covers about 115 meters more than it would on a straight-line bridge. Scaled to 100,000 vehicles, this results in approximately 11,500 km of extra driving, consuming over 8,000 liters of fuel and releasing more than 18 tons of CO₂ into the atmosphere. While the design intends to harmonize with nature (believe me it does not), the additional fuel consumption and greenhouse gas emissions somewhat contradict its environmentally conscious image.

(Translated by Google) The Cerro Arequita area is a destination with great recreational and tourist potential, which could offer a unique experience to its visitors. Unfortunately, the current administration does not uphold this value. The park ranger responsible for the area demonstrates an uncooperative attitude and, in many cases, acts on personal grounds that end up affecting the visit. The restrictions imposed—such as the two-hour limit on the area and the requirement to leave by 5:00 PM, even when it's still bright outside—are arbitrary and without clear justification. These regulations, coupled with the lack of consistency in communicating schedules and rules, generate discomfort and discouragement among visitors. Instead of promoting respect for the environment through education and community building, the choice is to impose rigid rules that restrict the opportunity to enjoy the park in a calm and responsible manner. Another worrying aspect is the restrictive stance toward outdoor sports activities, such as climbing, slacklining, and hiking. Instead of promoting these sustainable practices that connect people with nature and foster a culture of sport and respect for the environment, they are discouraged without solid technical foundations. It has even been argued that equipping climbing routes harms the mountain, without any evidence or studies to support this claim. These types of decisions not only limit the responsible use of the space, but also go against the development of an active community committed to the natural environment. Furthermore, the site lacks adequate signage and basic services such as restrooms, which are essential in an area with so much tourist activity. It would be desirable to review the management of the area so that Cerro Arequita welcomes its visitors with the openness, information, and respect it deserves, enhancing its natural and sporting value instead of restricting it with inflexible or arbitrary decisions.

(Translated by Google) Terrible management. The restrictive rules they impose change every week. Zero initiative, the trails are poorly marked, there isn't enough staff to enforce reasonable hours, and there's no official communication channel other than the park ranger, who changes the rules weekly. In case of accidents, they have no tools to carry out a possible rescue. It's a real shame that the wings of athletes in this country are being clipped for no reasonable reason, and that a park ranger is so cruel to a sports community.

(Translated by Google) Cerro Arequita is a beautiful place and truly worth visiting, but the current regulations are too restrictive and greatly detract from the experience. Visitors are only allowed a maximum of two hours, and although sunset is around 7 p.m., they require you to leave by 5 p.m., regardless of whether you're climbing or trekking. It's a shame that you can't enjoy a full day at such a beautiful site, especially if you're coming from Montevideo and spending more time traveling than on the mountain itself. I hope they'll review these restrictions and offer a little more flexibility so you can make the most of your visit.

Playa Vik Jose Ignacio is a luxurious and modern hotel that opened in 2009, offering refined quarters, a gym, a restaurant, and an outdoor pool. It is situated on the coveted point of Playa Mansa with a stunning 75-foot infinity pool made of Uruguayan black Absolute Nero granite overlooking the ocean. The internationally acclaimed architect Carlos Ott designed this glamorous hotel. Guests can enjoy beautiful sandy beaches, excellent service at La Susana restaurant, and well-kept surroundings.
My stay at Playa Vik José Ignacio was nothing short of magical. From the moment I arrived, I was in awe of the architecture—this place is an absolute architectural marvel. Sleek, art-filled, and effortlessly sophisticated, it’s truly a design lover’s dream. I stayed in the Fuerteventura Suite, which overlooks both the infinity pool and the ocean. Waking up to that view felt like living inside a dream. The bathtub alone deserves its own mention—spacious & sculptural. At night, the pool becomes pure magic—glimmering with twinkling lights that reminded me of a Rolls-Royce starlight ceiling. It truly felt like the stars had descended into the water. As someone with dietary restrictions, I was thrilled to find that everything at the hotel is gluten-free (except for a cute little “gluten corner” at breakfast that made me smile). The food was delicious, nourishing, and beautifully presented. The staff made the experience even more memorable. Always smiling, kind, and eager to help—they really make you feel at home. Walking along the beach each day was deeply soothing, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover Vik Bahía just a few minutes away by foot. I visited their wellness center, The Shack, and loved every moment there. Although La Susana was closed during my visit, everyone I’ve spoken to insists it’s the place to go—so I’ll definitely be back to experience it. Highly recommend Playa Vik to anyone seeking beauty, serenity, and inspiration in one of the most special corners of the world.

I desperately wanted to love this hotel but despite the great futuristic design, beach front location and spacious suites , it really felt like the property was neglected and only had a few staff members for the whole place (often resulting in whole areas being unattended), as well as ongoing construction work while we were there. Furthermore, our 1,000$ a night suite had a broken air conditioning system and the heating couldn’t be turned off either so it got to the point where we couldn’t stay inside without the front door open to let air in. Things got worse as on the second evening the blackout blinds in our room stopped working and it turned out they had been disabled by the staff earlier that day without anyone telling us. Thankfully another suite next door was available for us to move into. I’ve attached photos of both rooms but also of the lack of attention to detail when it comes to keeping the hotel at a level where it’s worth the price. Also: I’d love to see more options on the breakfast menu(so far only eggs available) and in general food quality should be improved. Gym needs renewing too. Equipment is rusty and very old. What I liked was the sunsets over the pool, the layout of the suites, the quality of bathrobes/ slippers / toiletries provided and how nice the staff were , you can tell they work hard.

We went with my 5-year-old son, and he loved exploring every corner and letting his imagination run wild at every sound, hoping for an animal to appear. He didn't see it; surely, with the noise of the people, they're all hiding. But it's a beautiful experience. We visited the puma fountain (free) and then hiked the trail to the waterfall ($100). The wooden games are also a beautiful place for a family picnic. Since we weren't prepared, we decided to go to the inn there. The ravioli were delicious. The only constructive criticism is that it says "country restaurant," and the truth is that there wasn't a great variety of country food to make the place more special. Another 5 stars for everything: the attention upon arrival and the girl at the inn, etc. (Original) El lugar hermoso, limpio, tranquilo. Very good experience at this winery. People took time to explain what they sre doing and tasting was well narrated. Food was may be okay, but overpriced. Typically, you will pay up for a kick at such places, but we were underwhelmed with all dishes and they appeared to us quite bland. Surprisingly the cheaper Tenant Cemento was better tasting vs 3 times more expensive one. Chardonnay 2015 was not good for $27. All prices are in the US$. App for $18, mains for @$40, deserts aare for $15. Wines are starting at @$40. Interesting point, they have caviar service with Champaign....very unusual, full spread goes for $375.

Just an incredible place. Beautiful setting in the middle of rolling hills. Unfortunately that's where it all ends. Tour was less than interesting. Then worse was the wine tasting. How you can possibly have someone who knows nothing about your wines. Nor speaks clear Spanish or English be the person who serves your wines to your visitors. Mine you this is not a cheap experience. Truly a shame!! We were sat in a beautiful setting. Then our wines served all the same time. No explanation, no personally, no interaction nothing. We were 4 people and only given appetizers for 3. Ridiculous attention and you might as well bring a bag of potato chips for what you get. The only feed back and interest was when we approached the bar and started talking to the girl behind counter. She told us more and let us try other wines. Which we ended up buying. Sorry, because of our experience. I can not recommend anyone waste their time nor money at Vina Eden.

We did the tour and wine tastings today December 5-2024. The tour is fun not to long but you have to climb up a not to steep of a hill and some rocky terrain. But on to the wine tastings. We enjoyed the wines, all four that we tried, super delicious. We also had some cheese and meets with some artisan oil and the fresh artisan baked bread was awesome also. Ernesto was our tour guide and he did a fabulous job of making us feel at home. The 3 dogs they have up there are friendly even though they bark a bit and chase you as you drive up the hill. But as you can see in the pics they loved hanging around people. Anyhow great place with awesome wine! Definitely a must for any wine connoisseur!

We had an amazing time at the winery!! The wines were delicious and our host Gustavo was so welcoming and knowledgeable. We loved hanging out with the sweet pups, the amazing view, and delicious wine and tapas. We’ve been to many wineries and this is in our top now! You can tell they care about the quality of the wine and are passionate. Will return if I’m ever back in Punta del Este!!

We did a tour and wine tasting with Fiorela and it was fantastic! The area for wine-tasting is outdoors with a spectacular view. Fiorela gave us information in English which was greatly appreciated. Communication with them through WhatsApp had a fast response time. My only suggestion would be to give more directions on how to access the place from the main road. We figured it out, but wouldn’t have minded a bit of info beforehand since we had to open two gates ourselves.

The views are nice, and the staff are friendly, but the experience here is not remarkable. The olive oil is great. The wine is ok, the food is ok, and the facilities are quite basic: a simple carport type overhang and some picnic tables. The entire facility is somewhat temporary construction, including the bathrooms. All of that is inconsistent with the high prices charged. Do not recommend.

We booked for a visit, tasting and lunch for 12:30pm. We had to wait an hour… The visit never happened! The view is stunning, wine was ok but the lunch was not up to the price. It wasn’t fresh. We had to complain otherwise they were charging us for the full price while we did not get the visit + we got the wine but no one to explain what we were drinking. A bit disappointed but stunning view.
