“My mind went blank at that moment. After calming down, I immediately took photos and videos as evidence, then pulled the camera out. During the process, I noticed it was connected to a series of wires, so I didn't act rashly and called the police right away!” the person stated in their social media post.
Fu Jian, director of Henan Zejin Law Firm, told Jiupai News that hotels have an obligation to protect customers' privacy during service provision and should promptly detect and remove any hidden cameras in rooms. Installing cameras to spy on others' privacy constitutes illegal use of eavesdropping or secret recording equipment, and public security authorities should initiate an investigation. Fu Jian added that, as venue managers, hotels are required under the Civil Code to ensure customers' privacy security. If they fail to fulfill this duty and consumers' privacy is illegally violated, the hotel operators should bear compensation responsibility. Moreover, the Public Security Administration Punishment Law explicitly prohibits peeping, secret recording, eavesdropping, or disseminating others' privacy. Miniature pinhole camera devices fall under the category of eavesdropping and secret recording equipment, and producing or selling such products may violate criminal law.
According to Star Video reports, hotel staff responded that after the incident, the hotel immediately cooperated with the police investigation. The police took photos and removed the camera. Staff then contacted the manager to communicate with the guest about changing rooms. The hotel also conducted a comprehensive check and found no cameras in other rooms. The police are currently conducting further investigations.
