Many social media platforms are now seeing a surge in pet sales scams disguised as "free adoption" offers.
After seeing a pet adoption post on social media, Shenzhen resident Zhang Chuan contacted the poster via WeChat. The sender claimed the pet could be adopted for free with just a delivery fee. However, after paying nearly 700 yuan, the sender revealed it was actually a pet sale, not free adoption.
This scam has spread from online to offline.
Sun Kongwu from Suzhou "adopted" a corgi at a local pet store but was charged over 1,700 yuan for vaccines, grooming cards, dog food, etc., only to receive a sick pet.
How the Scam Works
He Yan, a cattery owner in Kunming, Yunnan, explains common tactics:
- Requiring long-term pet supply purchase contracts
- Charging exorbitant deposits or delivery fees
- Providing low-quality or overpriced pet supplies
Lawyer Meng Zedong from Yingke Law Firm points out:
If fraudulent amounts exceed 3,000 yuan, it may constitute fraud under Chinese law, and victims can file class action lawsuits.
How to Avoid Pet Adoption Scams
- Insist on meeting the pet in person
- Request health certificates and vaccination records
- Be wary of any prepayment requests
- Sign formal adoption contracts
Genuine adopters care more about the pet's welfare than profiting from the adoption process.
