Hello and welcome to The Treehouse Show. 0:00
The Treehouse Show is a weekly conversation with the Treehouse community. 0:01
[SOUND] We're back. 0:04
Hey, it's 2018 and this week we're gonna talk about some tips and 0:09
tricks that will help you accomplish your learning goals for the new year. 0:13
First of, let me just say 2018 looks really good on you. 0:17
Did you set a new learning goal or something for the New Year? 0:23
I bet you did. 0:26
Learning new things can be challenging but we're here to help you through it. 0:27
Now we've gone and gathered up some of the best learning resources for you. 0:31
First off, on our blog, there's a post form our head of learning, Dave McFarland. 0:34
Dave talks about three ways to learn by studying less, 0:39
which seems counter-intuitive, doesn't it? 0:42
But, it's backed by learning science. 0:45
Make sure to check it out. 0:47
The link is in the teacher's notes. 0:48
Mary McPherson wrote another great post, 12 Ways to Balance Your Work and 0:50
Study Life, which are great reminders for how we should be approaching our studying. 0:54
Now my favorites of course are the reminders that laughing and 0:59
being an optimist are the key to keeping your balance in check. 1:02
If you've already started experiencing that horrible feeling of 1:05
I don't think I'm capable of coding. 1:09
Well let me tell you something, you are. 1:11
Those challenges are good, embrace them, and stick with it. 1:13
Have you heard of the growth mindset? 1:17
Here at Treehouse, we're huge fans of psychologist and author, Carol Dweck. 1:19
Carol wrote a wonderfully enlightening book, 1:23
called Mindset, The New Psychology of Success. 1:26
I highly recommend you give it a read. 1:29
It'll change your mindset. 1:31
It applies directly to your coding journey. 1:34
One of my favorite quotes from the book is, 1:37
if parents wanna give their children a gift, 1:39
the best thing that they can do is to teach their children to love challenges. 1:41
Be intrigued by mistakes, enjoy effort, and keep on learning. 1:46
That way, their children don't have to be slaves of praise. 1:50
They will have a lifelong way to build and 1:53
repair their own confidence, super powerful way to view learning. 1:56
And speaking of which, have you seen our How To Learn series yet? 2:01
We're continually adding tips and tricks to this series. 2:04
It covers topics like How to Focus and How to Build a Habit of Learning. 2:07
We include lots of lessons from the mindset book in these videos. 2:11
Check the link in the teacher's notes to watch them all. 2:14
A common piece of advice from this series is the importance of taking breaks. 2:17
Let the information you're learning sink in, and 2:21
think about it, away from the screen. 2:23
Now those aha moments are amazing. 2:26
Let them happen. 2:28
Yeah, another important thing is to make sure that you practice 2:30
retrieving the information. 2:33
For this, we've been creating what we call, Practice Session Workshops. 2:35
Have you seen these, yet? 2:39
They're a great way to ensure that all the knowledge that you're accumulating 2:40
is sticking. 2:44
Now if you haven't caught one yet, they're typically just a couple of videos. 2:45
One where we show you a problem and you try to solve it, and 2:49
then you watch your teacher provide the solution. 2:51
If you haven't seen these yet, you're gonna love them. 2:54
Student feedback has been more of these now, please. 2:56
So make sure check the notes on this video. 2:59
We're constantly improving our methods to help you reach your learning goals, 3:02
whether it be for a New Year's goal, or better yet, one of lifelong learning. 3:05
Here's to a knowledge pact, retentionful, and practicey pact 2018. 3:09
You got this. 3:14
