Quality Characteristics of Liubao Tea
Liubao loose leaf tea features robust and tightly rolled dark brown leaves, producing a bright reddish-brown liquor with mellow and refreshing taste. The distinctive betel nut aroma and reddish-brown infused leaves make it famous for its "red color, strong taste, aged character and mellow flavor" throughout Guangxi and Southeast Asia.
Aging Characteristics
Liubao tea improves with age. During prolonged storage, it develops beneficial golden fungal spores called "golden flowers" (Jinhua). These microorganisms secrete various enzymes that accelerate the transformation of tea compounds, creating unique flavors.
Origin and Production Areas
Originating from Liubao Town in Cangwu County, Wuzhou City of Guangxi, Liubao tea is now produced in several surrounding counties. Located at the Guangxi-Guangdong border, Wuzhou is agriculturally rich and renowned as the "hometown of cinnamon", "star anise" and "Liubao tea".
Traditional Processing Techniques
Liubao tea comes in both loose and compressed forms. The traditional processing involves primary processing (fixation, first rolling, pile-fermentation, re-rolling, drying) and refinement (sorting, grading, blending, first steaming and piling, second steaming and pressing, aging) to develop its characteristic "Liubao aroma".
Brewing Methods and Health Benefits
Brew with boiling water to both rinse the leaves and activate the tea's properties. As a warm-natured tea, Liubao offers multiple health benefits including clearing heat, moistening lungs, relieving summer heat, improving vision, calming the mind, and aiding digestion - perfect both after meals and for cleansing the digestive system.
Historical Context
The name "Liubao tea" originated from the Ming Dynasty's Baojia system, where Cangwu County was divided into 11 townships including Duoxian Township comprising six "bao" (forts) from the first to sixth. As it gained popularity in Guangdong and Hong Kong, "Liubao" (sixth fort) was homophonously associated with "six treasures", symbolizing exceptional quality.
The Ancient Tea Route
As one of the origins of China's Maritime Silk Road, Wuzhou saw merchants shipping Liubao tea overseas via the Xijiang River during late Qing Dynasty, creating the "boat tea" culture. Transported via Singapore to Malaysia, Liubao tea became integrated into local tea culture, flourishing the tea route heritage.
