Manage project role membership

A Jira space role is a flexible way to associate users and/or groups with a particular space. Unlike groups, which have the same membership throughout Jira apps, space roles have specific members for each space. Users may play different roles in different space.

This page contains instructions for managing membership of existing space roles. For information on creating and using space roles, see Managing space roles.

For all of the following procedures, you must be logged in to Jira as a space administrator.

You can't edit space permissions or roles on the Free plan for Jira Software or Jira Work Management, and you can't configure work-level security on any Free plan (including Jira Service Management). Find out more about how space permissions work in Free plans. To take advantage of Jira's powerful space permission management features, upgrade your plan.

View space role members

  1. Next to the name of your space in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  2. Select People.

Assign a user or group to a space role

  1. Next to the name of your space in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  2. Select People.

  3. Select Add people from the top-right corner.

  4. Search for the user or group you wish to add, and select the space role you wish to add them to.
Note that the Browse users and groups global permission is required to search for existing users or groups at this step. If you do not have this permission, you will need to specify the exact name or email address.

  5. Select Add.

Clean up unused space role permissions

Those with Jira Enterprise licenses can use the Site optimizer to remove old and unused space role permissions en masse. Find out how to use the Site optimizer.

Remove a user or group from a space role

  1. Next to the name of your space in the sidebar, select More actions (•••), then Space settings.

  2. Select People.

  3. In the user's or group's entry on the table, select Remove.

  • Because group membership can only be edited by users with the Administer Jira global permission, space administrators may therefore prefer to assign users, rather than groups, to their space roles.

  • A space role does not need to have any users or groups assigned to it, although space admins should be careful with this. Depending on how a space role is used (e.g. if the project's permission scheme is using space roles), it is possible that not having anyone in a particular space role could make some space activities unavailable.
