April 19, Pu'er, China - At the 15th China Pu'er Tea Festival, Academician Chen Zongmao of the Chinese Academy of Engineering highlighted that pesticide residue issues are significantly hindering China's tea export growth.
As the only academician in tea science at the Chinese Academy of Engineering, Chen has long been dedicated to pesticide residue research. He stated, "In 2016, China's tea production reached 2.4 million tons, but exports were only 340,000 tons. Stringent foreign import standards and our inadequate pesticide use restrictions are the main reasons."
Key Statistics:
- In 2015, 33% of tea samples exported to Europe exceeded pesticide residue limits
- Pesticide residues account for 80% of tea quality and safety issues
Chen proposed four key solutions:
- Promote green prevention and control technologies
- Achieve full-process cleanliness in tea production
- Reduce chemical pesticide use
- Enhance scientific fertilization education for tea farmers
Addressing online rumors that "98% of tea contains pesticide residues", Academician Chen explained: "Most pesticides are fat-soluble and insoluble in water. The leaching rate during brewing depends on the pesticide's water solubility."
Expert Advice: Tea enterprises should closely monitor pesticide residue standard changes in key markets like the EU and adjust cultivation and processing methods accordingly.
