According to business registration information, Chinese internet giant ByteDance has completed the full acquisition of emerging headphone brand Oladance, now holding 100% shares with all previous investors exiting. This marks another significant step in ByteDance's AI hardware strategy.
Public records show Oladance was founded in 2021 by former BOSE executive Li Haoqian and several BOSE engineers. The brand pioneered the OWS (Open Wearable Stereo) patented technology, featuring non-in-ear comfort and audiophile-grade sound quality.
IDC data shows open-ear headphone shipments reached 11.84 million units in H1 2024, a staggering 303.6% year-on-year growth. ByteDance's acquisition comes at the market boom period and is seen as crucial for building its AI ecosystem.
This isn't ByteDance's first hardware move. In 2021, it acquired VR company PICO for 9 billion yuan, following Meta's $2 billion Oculus acquisition in 2014. Tech giants entering new fields through strategic acquisitions has become an industry norm.
With AI expanding to edge devices, AI hardware is becoming the new frontier. Products like iFlytek's iFlybuds AI earphones and Meta's Ray-Ban smart glasses demonstrate huge potential. ByteDance's entry promises more innovations in generative AI applications at the edge.
