Fedora 42 and Oracle

Fedora 42 was released a few days ago. Let’s start with the standard warning.

Here are the usual suspects.

As explained in the first link, I just do this for fun, and to see what is coming to RHEL/OL in the future.

Vagrant & Packer

I pushed Vagrant builds to my GitHub.

If you want to try these you will need to build a Fedora 42 box. You can do that using Packer. There is an example of that here.

What’s New?

What’s new with Fedora 42 you ask? You can read about it here.

Of course they are playing up references to “The Hitchhikers Guide to the Universe”.

There are newer versions of most of the building blocks and there is a new installer for the workstation version of Fedora 42. I use the server version, so even a manual installation looks similar to the previous version. Maybe the next version will use the new installer for all flavours of the software.

Oracle VirtualBox 7.1.8

VirtualBox 7.1.8 arrived about 9 days ago. I got a bit caught up with patching drama and the Easter holiday, so I’m a bit late to the party. 🙂

The downloads and changelog are in the usual places.

I’ve done an install on a Windows 10 and a Windows 11 PC and they worked fine.

Like the last release I had to reboot my PC after the install for Vagrant to work. Once I rebooted it was business as usual.

Since I installed it I’ve done a bunch of builds with the latest Oracle patches and I’ve not had any drama.

Vagrant

If you are into using Vagrant, you can find my Vagrant builds here.

I’ve added this quarter’s patches to many of the relevant builds. There wasn’t a new version of Vagrant since my last post. We are still on Vagrant 2.4.3.

Packer

If you want to rebuild your own versions of Vagrant boxes you can use my Packer builds for inspiration.

There was a newer version of Packer released since my last post, so now we are on Packer 1.12.0.

Apple Silicon

Remember, I don’t have any Apple Silicon kit, so I can’t comment on the Apple Silicon port of VirtualBox. 🙂
