[Global Times Report] According to Taiwan's "Central News Agency" on March 19, during a policy review session at Taiwan's legislative body, Democratic Progressive Party (DPP) legislator Chiu Chih-wei questioned Digital Minister Audrey Tang about the authorities' stance on TikTok.

Tang claimed that "hostile foreign forces" could exercise substantial control, whether directly or indirectly, labeling such products as "threats to national cybersecurity." She asserted that TikTok currently falls into this "harmful product" category. This statement drew criticism from Taiwanese netizens, with some saying "they call others problematic because they can't innovate themselves," while others argued that "the Digital Ministry is the real harmful product."

According to reports, Tang made these remarks in response to legislators' questions, stating that the DPP authorities' strategy has remained consistent in recent years - classifying TikTok as a "harmful product" that's banned in public sector institutions and venues.

These comments immediately sparked heated discussions among Taiwanese netizens. Some called it "incompetent thinking," while others said: "The Digital Ministry is the harmful product," "Audrey Tang is the real danger," "Isn't the Digital Ministry just a useless department?" "The Digital Ministry is the true hazard," "Shouldn't the Digital Ministry be labeled a harmful department for spending so much public funds?" Other netizens criticized: "They call others problematic because they can't innovate themselves."

Last year, the DPP proposed a complete ban on TikTok under the pretext of "curbing election misinformation." After Taiwan's two elections this year, the DPP discussed TikTok at its Central Standing Committee meeting on January 17, suggesting it should be treated as a "national security" issue.

Kuomintang legislator Hung Meng-kai said it's ridiculous how the DPP binds itself with political ideology, noting that even DPP supporters, members, and politicians use TikTok. If the DPP continues going against global trends, it will only distance itself further from the people.

A media literacy survey in Taiwan showed that 50.7% of Taiwanese youth most frequently use TikTok for information. In response, Taiwan Affairs Office spokesperson Chen Binhua stated that since people across the strait share the same language and culture, mainland social apps like Douyin (TikTok), Xiaohongshu, Bilibili, Weibo, and WeChat are convenient and entertaining for Taiwanese youth, naturally earning their favor. "We support what Taiwanese youth enjoy and welcome more young people to learn about the mainland and make friends through platforms they like," Chen said.
