WordPress Announces "Fork" of a Plugin Developed by WP Engine

WordPress.org has released a fork of a popular WP Engine plugin to "remove commercial reselling and fix a security issue," announced Matt Mullenweg, WordPress co-founder and Automattic CEO today.

This "minimal" update of the Advanced Custom Fields (ACF) plugin is now called "Secure Custom Fields." It remains unclear what security issue Mullenweg referred to in his post.

He wrote that he "invoked point 18 of the plugin directory guidelines," where the WordPress team reserves multiple rights, including removing or modifying plugins "without developer consent."

Mullenweg explained this move relates to recent lawsuits filed by WP Engine against him and Automattic. Similar situations have occurred before, but not at this scale.
