Hong Kong, January 3 (Xinhua) -- Chow Kai-leung, acting executive director of the Hong Kong Trade Development Council (HKTDC), stated on the 3rd that the council estimates Hong Kong's total export value in 2017 increased by 8% year-on-year, with export volume rising by 6.2%. Notably, toy product exports showed strong performance, achieving significant double-digit growth in both traditional and emerging markets.

周启良指,2017年首11个月,香港玩具产品出口总值为445亿港元,按年升32%,主要出口市场中,美国按年升18%,内地升40%,日本升49%,德国升236%;新市场中,泰国按年升62%,马来西亚升88.5%,印尼升44%。

Chow pointed out that in the first 11 months of 2017, Hong Kong's toy export value reached HK$44.5 billion, a 32% year-on-year increase. Among major export markets, the US saw an 18% rise, mainland China 40%, Japan 49%, and Germany 236%. In emerging markets, Thailand recorded a 62% increase, Malaysia 88.5%, and Indonesia 44%.

Additionally, the HKTDC's industry export index for Q4 2017 showed that toys were the only sector with rebounding confidence, indicating sustained optimism in the industry for 2018 toy exports.

Regarding future trends, Chow believes Hong Kong's toy and gaming industry will continue to grow due to technological breakthroughs in electronic games. As educational concepts emphasize science, technology, and engineering (STEM), demand for educational toys will increase. Additionally, Hollywood blockbusters will drive sales of licensed toy products.

贸发局将于1月8日至11日在香港会议展览中心举办玩具展、婴儿用品展以及文具展。已踏入第44届的玩具展是亚洲规模最大,三项展览去年吸引9.7万名买家,今年则有2940家环球展商,而截至目前的买家登记数量相较去年亦有一定升幅。

The HKTDC will host the Toy Fair, Baby Products Fair, and Stationery Fair at the Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre from January 8 to 11. The 44th Toy Fair is Asia's largest, with last year's three fairs attracting 97,000 buyers. This year, 2,940 global exhibitors will participate, and buyer registrations have already surpassed last year's numbers.

Chow noted that Hong Kong's baby product and stationery exports saw year-on-year growth in the first 11 months of 2017. With China's two-child policy, approximately 3 million additional babies are expected annually, creating significant demand for infant products—a market worth watching.

展望2018年香港出口表现,周启良表示整体环境向好。他指,有八成厂商表示今年销售会持平或有所上升,由于厂商的预测一直趋于保守,因而贸发局估计今年出口货值及出口货量将分别按年升6%及4%。

Looking ahead to Hong Kong's 2018 export performance, Chow stated the overall environment remains positive. He mentioned that 80% of manufacturers expect sales to stabilize or increase this year. Since manufacturers' forecasts tend to be conservative, the HKTDC estimates export value and volume will rise by 6% and 4% year-on-year, respectively.

谈到为何整体趋势向好,今年的预测增长却较去年低时,周启良指出,这是因为考虑到中美贸易关系或现不稳定因素,并且美国加息步伐可能会加快。

When asked why growth projections for 2018 are lower than 2017 despite positive trends, Chow explained this accounts for potential instability in US-China trade relations and possible accelerated US interest rate hikes.

Furthermore, Chow stated that to promote environmental sustainability, practicality, and convenience for exhibitors, the HKTDC will gradually implement e-badges across its fairs—a system first trialed successfully at November 2017's Optical Fair. The council will also enhance procurement features on its trade fair websites to facilitate buyer-seller connections.
