In 1973, Kunming Tea Factory successfully trial-produced large-leaf Pu-erh tea and began independent export. That year, 10.2 tons of "Qi Zi" tea cakes were shipped to Hong Kong's Tak Shun Hong, worth $16,300. By 1985, Pu-erh tea exports to Hong Kong and Macau increased to 1,560 tons, worth $2.4917 million.

Nam Tin Tea Company was founded by Mr. Zhou Cong and became Hong Kong's largest first-hand tea dealer from late 1970s to 1990s. The company introduced the 7542 (commonly known as "88 Qing") and developed two classic tea products 8582 and 8592. In 1979, Zhou Cong helped Menghai Tea Factory improve fermentation techniques, increasing Yunnan Pu-erh production from 10 tons to 1,500 tons by 1984.
