Suzhou Creek, the mother river flowing deep in the hearts of Shanghai people, has not only witnessed the growth of the working class but also carries the glorious history of Shanghai's national industrial development.
In the 1860s, capital turned its attention to this river due to its unique advantage of "connecting the hinterland upstream and reaching the sea downstream", marking the beginning of modern national industry in Shanghai and even China.
By 1949, there were thousands of factories along both banks of Suzhou Creek, with 860 factories of various sizes in Putuo District alone. These factories not only made "Made in Shanghai" popular nationwide but also caused serious pollution to Suzhou Creek.
