Unveiling the Millennia-old Connection Between Wuzhou and Liubao Tea Through the "Emperor Shun's Southern Tour" Painting

1. Emperor Shun's Southern Tour: The Dawn of Lingnan Civilization

Historical Records states: "Emperor Shun toured the south and died in the wilderness of Cangwu." This journey brought advanced agricultural civilization and tea culture to Lingnan region. Legend says Emperor Shun used tea discovered by Shennong to treat diseases caused by southern miasma, as evidenced by the "Bestowing Nectar" stone carving in Wuzhou Museum.

2. Zhao Guang's City Founding: The Rise of Cangwu Kingdom

In 203 BC, Zhao Tuo established Nanyue Kingdom and appointed his brother Zhao Guang as King of Cangwu. According to Cangwu County Annals, Zhao Guang built his royal city "nestled against tea mountains and by the Osmanthus River", marking the early development of tea culture in Wuzhou. Bronze and pottery artifacts unearthed from Han Dynasty prove the advanced craftsmanship of that era.

3. Lu Yu's "Tea Classic" and Its Connection to Liubao Tea

The opening of "Tea Classic" mentions "the fine trees of the south", likely referring to Liubao tea. "Tongjun's Herbal Collection" records tea-drinking customs in Guangdong and Guangxi during Northern and Southern Dynasties, with compressed tea possibly being the prototype of Liubao tea.

4. The Golden Age of Liubao Tea in Qing Dynasty

After Kangxi opened maritime trade, Liubao tea became popular in Hong Kong, Macau and Southeast Asia via waterways. During Qianlong's reign when Guangzhou became the only trading port, Wuzhou connected via Xijiang River, making Liubao tea an important commodity on the Maritime Silk Road. Cangwu County Annals clearly records "Liubao tea from Duoxian Township, with rich flavor that doesn't change overnight".

5. Dragon Mother Legend and Liubao Tea Culture

In the millennia-old Dragon Mother legend, she bestowed tea seeds upon Liubao villagers and taught cultivation methods. This beautiful folklore reflects Liubao tea's significant position in Lingnan cultural sphere, showcasing its profound cultural heritage.
