In the Malaysian tea market, Liubao tea has a special nickname - "Big Leaf". This name conceals a little-known history of Hong Kong's re-export trade.
原种六堡茶实际上是灌木型中叶种。从历史茶票来看,六堡合口街的茶庄都强调"嫩叶幼芽"的品质。据老茶人回忆,当时销往港澳的主要是一芽两叶或三叶的茶谷、中茶,老茶婆仅供茶农自饮。
Authentic Liubao tea is actually medium-leaf shrub variety. Historical tea tickets show that tea houses in Hekou Street emphasized "tender leaves and young buds" quality. According to veteran tea masters, the main exports to Hong Kong and Macau were tea grains with one bud and two or three leaves, while older leaves were for farmers' own consumption.
"大叶"的称呼最早出现在香港茶庄,用于区分广西六堡茶与缅甸、越南大叶种制作的"六堡茶"。后来这个称呼被刻意引导成为六堡茶的别称。
The term "Big Leaf" first appeared in Hong Kong tea houses, used to distinguish Guangxi Liubao tea from "Liubao tea" made from Burmese and Vietnamese large-leaf varieties. Later this term was deliberately promoted as a nickname for Liubao tea.

During the Republic of China period, as Liubao tea gained popularity in Nanyang, rising transportation costs drove up prices. Hong Kong tea merchants began producing "Liubao tea" for export to Nanyang, initially using Guangdong tea leaves, later discovering that Vietnam's Ha Giang tea and other large-leaf varieties were cheaper with stronger flavor, thus widely adopted.
