Reporter|Cui Peng In April 2022, Google's Going Global Accelerator was officially launched. Six months later, Google showcased innovative projects from 10 Chinese startups, including Kudo Network specializing in functional game development.

Founded in 2015, the company developed step-counting game Wokamon and focus-training game Focus Quest, the latter being selected for Google Play's Best App of 2021. During the accelerator demo day, we interviewed founder Zhu Wenjie about commercialization challenges in functional gaming.

Zhu admitted: "In our early fitness gamification apps, we faced fierce ASO competition against giants like Nike and Joyrun. After pivoting to focus-training games, competitive pressure decreased significantly."

Zhu highlighted the industry pain point: "The core of functional games is utility > entertainment, which limits commercial scale. Current success cases are mostly small teams, even Tencent's cultural town projects are primarily non-profit."

Future Trends: Scenario Expansion and Tech Drivers

随着短视频成瘾智能眼镜等新场景出现,记账游戏、虚拟自习室等新型功能游戏正在兴起。朱文杰预测:"未来3-5年将出现更多游戏化解决方案。"

With emerging scenarios like short video addiction and smart glasses, new functional games like accounting trainers and virtual study rooms are emerging. Zhu predicts: "More gamified solutions will appear in 3-5 years."
