As evening falls, private cars open their trunks to display various small goods, attracting passersby. Since autumn, "trunk markets" have emerged across China.
In Donghu Park, Shizhong District, Zaozhuang City, Shandong Province, some turn their trunks into burger stalls, others decorate them as milk tea bars, and some sell handmade crafts.
At Wulin Night Market in Hangzhou, Zhejiang Province, a pink car has been transformed into a hand-squeezed lemon tea stall with eye-catching slogans. With excellent drink taste and unique decoration, this trunk stall has become an internet-famous check-in spot.
| What's Sold at Trunk Markets?
Visits to several Beijing trunk markets reveal that fast food and drinks like coffee, burgers, and cupcakes are most common, followed by handicrafts, fridge magnets, and pet supplies like snacks and clothing.
| How to Participate?
"Open flames aren't allowed at stalls, so food sold here is mainly fast food," a vendor said. Stalls also require food business licenses and other documents - "you can't just set up as you please."
| Is It Profitable?
Take handcrafted coffee stalls: at 20 yuan per cup, 60 cups can be sold on busy days for 1,200 yuan income. "But it's unstable - sometimes 60 cups, other times less than 10," said a Beijing vendor.
Social Benefits
Many young vendors say they participate more for personal interest. "Not every stall earns income, but there's always new gains" "I especially enjoy hearing compliments about my coffee"...
For consumers, "some items seen online might not prompt purchases, but seeing them at affordable prices in markets often creates buying impulses."
