Fragrance of Chinese Spring
The encounter between jasmine and tea dates back to the Song Dynasty. During the Xianfeng period of the Qing Dynasty, Fuzhou jasmine tea became a tribute tea and began large-scale commercial production.
In the 1850s, Fuzhou Port became the world's largest tea port, with jasmine tea selling well in Europe, America and Southeast Asia, earning it the nickname "Fragrance of Chinese Spring" among foreigners. Writer Bing Xin once wrote affectionately: "My hometown Fujian is both a tea hometown and the hometown of jasmine tea."
Nostalgic Memory of Fuzhou People
Jasmine has been deeply integrated into the cultural genes of Fuzhou people. In 1985, jasmine was selected as the city flower of Fuzhou. Intangible cultural heritage inheritor Fu Tianlong recalls: "The summer of Fuzhou in my childhood was filled with the fragrance of jasmine in every street and alley."
Intangible Cultural Heritage Craftsmanship
The scenting process of jasmine tea includes seven steps, emphasizing "tea leads floral fragrance, flowers enhance tea flavor". National-level intangible cultural heritage inheritor Chen Chengzhong said: "The finished product only shows tea but contains the fragrance of jasmine."
Policy Support and Innovative Development
In recent years, Fuzhou has introduced policies such as the "Fuzhou Jasmine Tea Protection Regulations" to support industrial development from planting and processing to brand building. Since 2008, Fuzhou jasmine tea has successively obtained three national geographical indication certifications, becoming the first agricultural product to receive such honors.
