Jiajiada (pseudonym) spent three years collecting signs from 50 failed small businesses and held a special "funeral" for them. This unique project aims to document the survival status of urban individual economies and convey a heartwarming message: "Closure is just the beginning of another life, not the end of the world."

[1] From Business Failure to Documenting Failures
In 2014, Jiajiada quit her job at an advertising company to start a fruit and vegetable juice shop, but it closed within a year due to poor location selection and seasonal factors. This experience inspired her to pay attention to other failed small businesses.
"Both the opening and closing days were quite desolate. I thought it would be heartwarming if someone could pay attention to these small shops," said Jiajiada.
[2] Life Stories of 50 Small Businesses
Among the shops Jiajiada collected, restaurants accounted for the majority, especially noodle shops. These shops all have little-known stories behind them:
- Adult shop owner: Finally closed the shop due to frequent damage by drunk customers, but felt "a sense of relief"
- Crayfish restaurant owner Chen Shuang: Once became popular due to media coverage, but business declined after the hype, eventually switching to work as a construction site clerk
- 20-year-old print shop: Opened to accompany children's schooling, chose to close the shop and return to hometown after children went to college
[3] "Small Business Funeral" Exhibition Resonates
Jiajiada spent 100,000 yuan of her own money to hold a 21-day exhibition, presenting these failed small businesses in creative ways:
• Made "spirit tablets" with equal sign plates
• Transformed noodle shop fans into wreaths
• Designed unique tombstones and epitaphs for each shop
After the exhibition, shop owners still asked if their failed businesses could "move into the cemetery." Jiajiada plans to establish an online memorial in the future to continue documenting these urban memories.
"Small businesses constitute the vitality of the city." said Jiajiada, "They make the city appear lively and vibrant."
