Request for Comments: Enhancing LLM Capabilities with Integrated Causal Reasoning
Status: Proposal
1. Abstract
This document proposes a new architectural pattern for integrating Large Language Models (LLMs) with the DeepCausality library. The core of this proposal is to offload complex reasoning tasks from the LLM to a specialized, pre-defined causal graph. In this model, the LLM's primary roles become user interaction and formatting the final response, rather than performing the core reasoning itself. This approach aims to mitigate several key limitations of current LLM-based systems, including high operational costs, the potential for factual "hallucination," and the inability to access real-time data. We believe this will make sophisticated AI-powered analysis more reliable, affordable, and accessible.
2. Introduction and Motivation
Large Language Models have seen a surge in adoption, becoming a central part of the "AI hype." They excel at natural language understanding and generation. However, when applied to complex, domain-specific reasoning or "what-if" scenarios, several challenges emerge:
This RFC proposes a hybrid approach that leverages the strengths of both LLMs and causal reasoning engines to create more robust, efficient, and trustworthy AI systems.
3. Proposed Solution: Architectural Framework
We propose a system where a DeepCausality model, exposed via a Model Control Plane (MCP), acts as a specialized reasoning agent for an LLM.
The proposed workflow is as follows:
By "dumbing down" the examples and clearly defining the causal relationships beforehand, we can harness the real power of this combined approach.
4. Key Advantages
This integrated architecture offers several significant benefits:
5. Illustrative Use Case: Smart Watering System Demo
To demonstrate the viability of this proposal, a proof-of-concept could be developed based on a "smart watering" example.
{"total_liters": 5.7}
, which the LLM then formats into: "The system used 5.7 liters of water last week."{"system_status": "OK", "sensors_healthy": true, "last_reading": {"soil_moisture": "65%"}, "plant_status": "Thriving"}
. The LLM would translate this into a comprehensive, easy-to-read summary for the user.Beta Was this translation helpful? Give feedback.
