Can load Blink, but large program load times out, ERROR

(Did we ever decide whether it was possible to upgrade the muxto firmware without a programmer? It looks like a bootloader is supposed to be in the chip (the samd11), but I'm not sure how to get it to enter the bootloader, or what "programmer" would be used to program it.)
