Despite complex domestic and international situations and a high base from the previous year, China's garment exports maintained growth in 2022, albeit at a significantly slower pace. According to China Customs statistics, from January to December 2022, China's cumulative garment exports reached $175.4 billion, a year-on-year increase of 3.2%, with the growth rate slowing by 1.4 percentage points compared to the first 11 months.
Quarterly analysis shows that China's garment exports grew by 7.4%, 16.1%, 6.3%, and -13.9% year-on-year in the four quarters of 2022, respectively. The significant decline in the fourth quarter was notable, but due to strong growth earlier in the year, annual exports still achieved 3.2% growth.
Over the three years of the pandemic, China reversed the declining trend in garment exports that began after peaking in 2014. Compared to 2019 (pre-pandemic), export volume has increased by approximately 20%, marking six consecutive years of stable growth.
As China optimizes its pandemic control measures in 2023, many foreign trade enterprises are actively exploring overseas markets, with garment companies particularly eager. However, global economic inflation, uncertain external environments, and weakening external demand will put additional pressure on the garment export industry.
To ensure stable orders and maintain high-quality export growth, the garment industry must enhance product quality, optimize performance, and increase market appeal. Companies should focus on technological innovation, advanced processing techniques, and intelligent manufacturing to achieve precision, green, and smart production.
China's long-standing textile expertise, complete industrial chain, and efficient supply chain provide a competitive edge in the global market, offsetting some labor cost disadvantages. Leading garment exporters already have orders scheduled through the third quarter of 2023, indicating potential for strong annual performance.
Looking ahead, China's garment export industry faces challenges such as weak international demand, low-cost overseas competition, trade friction, and supply chain diversification. However, by improving quality and services, the industry can seize new opportunities in global trade.
