Japanese green tea exports continue to grow, with a 26% year-on-year increase in export value in 2021 reaching ¥20.4 billion, according to trade statistics from Japan's Ministry of Finance. This growth is primarily driven by the global "Washoku boom" (Japanese food trend) and rising health consciousness among consumers.
Over the past decade, Japanese green tea exports have increased approximately fourfold. The United States is the largest export market, with exports reaching ¥10.3 billion in 2021, up 22% year-on-year. Exports to European countries like Germany and to Taiwan also showed strong performance, with export volume increasing 17% to 6,178 tons, setting a new historical record.
Western Markets: Matcha Products Lead the Trend
According to trade classifications, green tea can be divided into powdered products like matcha and leaf teas like sencha. In U.S. exports, powdered products account for 73% of total green tea exports. Products like "Matcha Latte" at Starbucks and other chain coffee shops have gained popularity in Western markets.
Asian Markets: Growing Demand for Healthy Beverages
In Asian markets, exports of leaf green tea primarily for drinking continue to increase. For example, in Taiwan, 90% of green tea exports are leaf tea products. Japan's position as a green tea exporter alongside China and Vietnam is becoming increasingly important in Asia.
The Japanese government has set a goal to increase exports of agricultural, forestry, and fishery products and foods by 60% from 2021 levels to ¥2 trillion by 2025. Green tea has been identified as a key export category, with plans to increase export value by 50% to ¥31.2 billion by 2025.
Challenges and Opportunities Coexist
Facing strict pesticide residue standards in Europe and America, Japan has actively promoted organic cultivation in recent years. In 2019, green tea certified with organic JAS standards increased to 3,644 tons, about double the amount from five years prior. Japan's Ministry of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries supports organic farmers through various measures, including variety improvement and subsidies for drift prevention technologies.
