New Relic Fleet Control

Preview

We're still working on this feature, but we'd love for you to try it out! New Relic's proprietary and confidential information. For authorized users only. Unauthorized uses and disclosures are prohibited. This feature is currently provided as part of a preview pursuant to our pre-release policies.

one.newrelic.com > Integrations & Agents > Fleet Control > All Fleets

Fleet Control manages fleets, which are homogeneous collections of managed entities with identically configured instrumentation. The type of managed entities currently supported are hosts and Kubernetes clusters. Entities within fleets can be configured to run various New Relic agents, including:

  • New Relic Control Agent
  • New Relic infrastructure agent
  • New Relic Kubernetes agent
  • New Relic OpenTelemetry collector (referenced as NRDOT)

These agents are responsible for monitoring different aspects of your environment and reporting core infrastructure and application performance monitoring data points: metrics, events, logs, and traces (MELT). Fleet Control ensures that every managed entity within the fleet receives the same instrumentation and agent configuration which helps you manage your observability landscape at scale.

To utilize Fleet Control, begin by installing Agent Control on your target entities (hosts and Kubernetes clusters).

Important

During preview, customers must only enable New Relic Control in non-critical, non-production environments that contain no sensitive information or data.

Agent Control communicates with Fleet Control over the OpenTelemetry Open Agent Management Protocol (OpAMP). Organization admins can enable specific users in their organization to access the Fleet Control interface. Users who are authorized to use Fleet Control can:

  • See the health of agents managed by Agent Control
  • Create fleets of managed entities
  • View fleet configurations
  • Deploy configuration changes
  • Troubleshoot instrumentation issues

Access Fleet Control

To access Fleet Control, go to one.newrelic.com > Integrations & Agents > Fleet Control.

Create a new configuration

  1. In Fleet Control, click Create configuration > New.
  2. Provide a name for your configuration.
  3. Select the corresponding agent type that this configuration will control.

Note: You can also create new configurations by cloning existing ones as a time-saving option.

Once created, a configuration requires specific agent settings to be defined. These settings will be applied to all agents within a fleet. Each modification to a configuration generates a new revision. You can then assign different revisions to different fleets, enabling tailored configurations across your enterprise.

Create a fleet

Currently, fleets are available for hosts and Kubernetes. To create a fleet:

  1. Click Create a fleet.
  2. Enter a fleet name and select the fleet type.

View fleet configurations

To view created configurations, go to Integrations & Agents > Configurations. This view displays all configurations available across your entire account, allowing you to select and apply the appropriate one to your specific fleet.

View fleet details

The fleet detail page provides a comprehensive overview of your selected fleet's health. You can view the overall health status and drill down further by selecting the Agents menu item. This section displays a detailed list of all agents currently managed by the fleet, along with their individual health indicators.

To view fleet details:

  1. Go to Integrations & Agents > Fleet Control.
  2. Select the specific fleet you want to work with. This will open the fleet detail page.

Create deployments

To initiate configuration changes for your fleet, navigate to the Deployments tab within the fleet details view. To create a new deployment:

  1. Click the Create deployment button.
  2. Provide a descriptive name and optional description for the deployment.

To add a configuration to a deployment:

  1. Select Add a configuration within the deployment creation process.

  2. Choose the desired configuration from the available options.

  3. Select the specific configuration revision to be deployed and click Add to deployment.

Add entities to a fleet

To incorporate existing instrumented agents into a fleet, click the Add Entities button. This allows you to search and specify entities for inclusion in the deployment.

Tip

Adding an entity to a fleet automatically applies the corresponding fleet agent type configuration to that entity.

Note: You can also add agents automatically to a fleet at the point of instrumentation using the installation tiles by selecting an already existing fleet.

Deploy configurations

Caution

  • Deployment impact: Deployments make changes to your running entities. We recommend that you schedule deployments during maintenance windows to minimize service disruptions.
  • Configuration precedence: Remote configurations override local configuration files you might have from past instrumentation or deployments. However, environment variables and system properties take precedence over remote configurations, so if they're set locally, they will override your deployed configuration.

Once you've added any configuration changes and/or entity additions to your deployment, click the Deploy button to push your changes out to the corresponding agents.

To track a deployment's progress, select it from the Deployments tab. Carefully monitor entity health for any errors during the deployment process. If issues arise, consider modifying the configuration or creating additional deployments to achieve the desired fleet state.
