How to Create One Data Visualization Workbook with Multiple Canvases

In this blog post we will, as the title suggests, create one data visualization workbook with multiple canvases.
This is advantageous because when there is a lot of data to display it can be displayed to the consumer in one workbook rather than making the consumer view multiple different workbooks. By using multiple canvases the consumer can view one workbook and navigate through the different canvases. Each canvas can have its own fields and filters.  If each canvas will be similar to a previous canvas then the canvases can be duplicated and then modified to change the field displays and filters accordingly.

ONE
Here we have a workbook named “COUNTER Usage Analysis” in the “Usage Data (COUNTER) subject area visualizing a table with the platform name, “TR_J1 – Total Item Requests” measure, and “DR_D1 – Total Item Requests” measure.

TWO
First we will rename the one existing default canvas from the default “Canvas 1” to “Table DR_D1 TR_J1”.
Right click the canvas name on the bottom and select “rename”.
We will call the canvas “Table DR_D1 TR_J1”

THREE
Now we will duplicate this canvas to a new canvas.
It is possible to add a new canvas rather than duplicating an existing one.
If the new canvas will be based on data already existing in the current canvas then it may be preferable to duplicate the existing canvas rather than adding a new one.
If you want to add a new canvas click the plus in the circle on the bottom.

If you want to duplicate the existing canvas right click the existing canvas on the bottom and select duplicate.

We have duplicated the canvas and it is by default called “{name of original canvas} copy”.
In our case it is therefore called “Table DR_D1 TR_J1 copy”.

We will right click the duplicated canvas and rename it to “DR_D1”

FOUR
Now we will edit the new (duplicated) canvas “DR_D1”.
Here we have removed the measure TR_J1 and left only DR_D1.
We added a filter to get the top 5 platforms with measure DR_D1 and displayed a table and horizontal graph, both sorted high to low by measure DR_D1.
Here is our customized canvas DR_D1.

FIVE
Now we will duplicate canvas DR_D1 and call it TR_J1.

SIX
Now we will Now we will edit the new (duplicated) canvas “TR_J1”.
We have made it like the canvas DR_D1 but replaced measure “DR_D1 – Total Item Requests” with “TR_J1 – Total Item Requests” .
Here is our customized canvas TR_J1.

SEVEN
The new multi-canvas workbook has been added as an analytics object and pinned to the menu of a consumer.
Note that this consumer does not have the role “Designs Analytics” or “General System Administrator” or “Analytics Administrator” and therefore does not see menu option “Analytics Object List” or any “Create Analysis” options.
