πŸ“£ About the Challenge

Welcome to CVHS Hacks! πŸŽ‰
We are a hackathon group based in Houston, Texas, hosting hackathons for high schoolers. We aim to bring the experience of hackathons β€” the pressure, exhilaration, and innovation β€” to young people.

Our dedication is to our members and the thrill of hackathons, and through this we hope that, together with our members, we can make a difference.

The challenge is designed to give members a taste of real-world problems that people will have to face, while also creating something to help the community.
The challenge is ultimately based on the UN SDGs  but will have a unique theme and specifications revealed on the day of the event.

Requirements

πŸš€ What to Build

Your project must tackle the specific theme revealed at the start of the event β€” expect a community help theme on discord.

You can build:

  • A software application, website, or mobile app

  • A hardware prototype (if you have the materials)

  • A hybrid solution combining hardware and software

  • Any other tech-based tool or idea that helps solve the challenge

Focus on building something functional, even if it’s just a rough prototype β€” the goal is to show how your idea works in real life.

πŸ“¦ What to Submit

βœ… Project demo link β€” A 2–3 minute video showing how your project works and what problem it solves.
βœ… Code repository β€” A link to your GitHub repo (or other platform) with clear instructions on how to run your project.
βœ… Project description β€” A short write-up including:

  • Team name and members

  • Problem you tackled

  • How your solution works

  • Technologies, APIs, or frameworks used

  • Challenges faced and how you solved them

Submit everything on the designated platform (to be announced at the event). Late submissions may not be judged!

Judging Criteria

  • Relevance to Theme & Problem
Judges will consider how clearly the project addresses the announced theme and problem statement, whether the problem is well understood, and if the solution stays focused on the main challenge.
  • Creativity & Originality
Judges will evaluate how unique and innovative the idea is compared to typical solutions, whether it shows new thinking or an unexpected approach, and how thoughtfully the team explored and developed their concept.
  • Potential Impact
Judges will look at the potential real-world benefit of the project, its practicality, how it could help its intended users or community, and whether it considers wider social or environmental impact.
  • Technical Execution
Judges will review how well the project functions, whether the prototype or demo works reliably, how effectively the team used appropriate tools and technology, and if the solution is technically sound and clearly explained.
  • Presentation & Communication
Judges will assess how clearly and confidently the team presents their project, whether the demo or pitch shows how the solution works, and if the documentation or write-up is well-organized and easy to understand.
