Impressive, Dennis! Nice work. FYI, on the OP's original test data, your fastsearch() completes each search in under 20 seconds using CPython, and in well under 1 second using PyPy. Unfortunately, that's so promising it can't just be dismissed offhandedly ;-) Looks like something quite worth pursuing here!
