About the challenge

An exciting hackathon for bay area high school students to promote community engagement while providing a fun place for you to explore and showcase your innovation and talent in AI.

Get started

  1. Decide which division you want to participate in and if you will work with a team of up to 3:
    • The Intro Division is for those who do not have a lot of experience in AI or coding
    • The Advanced Division is for those who do have experience in AI
    • Note that judges reserve the right to move participants from the Intro Division to the Advanced division if they deem that the participant untruthfuly entered into the Intro Divison rather than the Advanced Division. This is to keep the competition fair for everyone.

Requirements

What to Build

Build an AI model that helps solve a problem that communities in the bay area face. Integrate that model into an interface that can be used by your target audience.

What to Submit

  1. Expository video
    • Must explain your model and demonstrate how it works
    • Must include your name(s) but DO NOT include your school name(s)
  2. A 1-page report describing the problem you tried to solve, your dataset, the model(s) you used, results, etc. (similar to an abstract)
  3. Link to GitHub repo with ALL of the code for your project
    • We should be able to run the program if we want to

Important Notes:

  • In all of your submition material DO NOT include your school name(s) to prevent bias during judging
  • Consequences for including school names could be deductions or disqualification

Judging Criteria

  • Judging Criteria
Judging will be based on the following categories: Impact (10 pts), Originality (5 pts), Dataset and Preprocessing (5 pts), Model (5 pts), Metrics (5 pts), Integration (5 pts).
  • Impact (10 pts)
Does this project help solve a specific problem that affects people in the Bay Area?
  • Originality (5 pts)
Is this project relatively novel and unique?
  • Dataset and Preprocessing (5 pts)
Is the dataset chosen appropriate for the problem they are trying to solve?
  • Model (5 pts)
Do you train and optimize your own model or do you just use a pretrained model? Transfer learning is completely fine, but just loading a pretrained model without modifying it at all is strongly discouraged.
  • Metrics (5 pts)
Do you use accurate metrics to assess the performance of the model? Is the performance of the model decent? If the model accuracy is poor is there a good reason for why it performed the way it did? Are there ways to improve performance in the future?
  • Integration (5 pts)
Do you integrate the AI model into some sort of interface so that it can be used by people?
  • Video and Report (5 pts)
Are the video and report well made and professional? Do they accurately describe the project?
