Putting a canvas "marker" on an ipyleaflet map?

I'm able to put a canvas object wrapped in a WidgetController into the four corners of an ipyleaflet map, which is nice already! I've tried putting a canvas at some arbitrary place on the map like with a DivIcon marker, but that does not work. I wonder if this would be possible at all?
