China Net News August 13 - Shenzhen police recently cracked a major case of smuggling used clothing, seizing 549 tons of used clothes from abroad with a case value of about 11 million yuan. These "foreign garbage" clothes mainly came from places such as mortuaries and garbage dumps, and were simply refurbished before entering the Chinese market.
Health Hazards: These used clothes carry a large number of germs, including pollutants such as E. coli and blood stains. If the original owner had an infectious disease and the refurbishment process lacks formal disinfection, it can easily cause disease transmission.
Sales Channels: Smuggled used clothing mainly enters the market through the following channels:
- Street stalls and night markets
- Foreign trade overstock stores
- E-commerce platforms
- Rural markets
Regulatory Dilemmas: Although China has banned the import of used clothing since the 1980s, due to:
- Concealed smuggling channels
- Dispersed processing sites
- Lack of clear regulations on domestic processing and operation
Consumer Warning: When purchasing clothing, pay attention to:
- Avoid abnormally low-priced goods
- Check clothes for signs of use
- Choose formal channels for purchase
- Pay attention to whether the smell of clothes is abnormal
