On May 17 local time, Montana Governor Greg Gianforte officially signed the bill banning TikTok in the state. Montana has a population of over 1 million, while TikTok boasts more than 150 million users nationwide in the U.S.

Simultaneously, Gianforte issued an executive order expanding the ban to more Chinese apps. In addition to TikTok, WeChat, CapCut, Lemon8, and Pinduoduo's Temu were all blacklisted. The order alleges these apps have "connections with foreign adversaries" and mandates a comprehensive ban on state government devices and networks starting June 1.

Gianforte tweeted: "To protect Montanans' personal and private information from the Chinese Communist Party, I have banned TikTok in Montana." According to the bill, starting January 2024, providing TikTok downloads through Google and Apple app stores in Montana will be illegal.
